1. What inspired you to become a writer? MAURO FLORES pic
I must have been four years old when I read my uncle’s short stories and comic strips. He was the first person I ever knew that wrote and drew his own stories, and I worshipped him. It never occurred to me until recently, that my uncle was only fourteen years old at the time, and after revisiting those stories and cartoons, well, you can only imagine the quality of the work… BUT I still think about those stories to this day.
2. What's the one piece of advice that you were given that's really stuck with you?
Just finish the damn thing; the first draft is never going to be perfect.
3. What's your favorite thing about writing for the theater?
I love writing for a live audience and the anxiety that comes with it. I’m constantly scared of being boring because a drooping head is like a dagger to my heart.
4. What's the best play you've seen in the last year (and where)?
“Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea” at the Skylight Theatre. Seriously, it’s not plug. I came out of that show feeling energized, which is always a good thing.
5. Where's your favorite place to go in L.A?
Grauman's Egyptian Theatre. I know it’s in Hollywood, but I still love going there.

LAb WORKS is a festival of new plays by our resident PLAYlab writers performed as workshop productions and as readings in our 'black box' theatre. These are truly new plays; each year the PLAYlab writers begin and complete a new play from scratch.

Join the creator IN-Konversation immediately following. This moderator assisted chat allows the writer to immediately solicit audience feedback to further advance their project. It's a unique opportunity for the writer to ask pointed questions about what works and what doesn't.
